There are many things you can do to make your site better -- but there are just as many ways to hold your site back from being successful. The follow tips are outdate, has-been trends from the Internet’s past that continue to haunt uninformed Webmasters.
1. Shiny, Animated, Kindergarten Buttons: Remember those huge buttons from the early start of the net? Those big buttons that screamed, "My 8-year-old helped me design my site." Artsy touches like this are only acceptable for Day-Care sites, and even then, they tend to look amateurish.
2. Hit Counters: This is just sad. Your Site visitors really shouldn’t know what number visit they are. Do you really want to degrade your site in their eyes by letting them know they’re the 12th visitor to your site? Even the fake hit counters that start at 123, still don’t make your site look very professional, or trustworthy. It gives visitors the idea that you only care about the number of people that visit your site, not the quality of content or services you’re providing.
3. "Link To Us": Can you say "Desperate?" Don’t make your site seem as desperate as a 50-year-old trying to reclaim her youth through Botox and her granddaughter’s outfits. People will link to you when you are a respectable site, and that means not whoring your link out to everyone under the sun.
4. Animated, Eye-Wrenching Backgrounds: Don’t make it hard for your visitor to read your site. You want to make it easy for them to get and understand your information. Your site should be appealing, with good color choices and a comfortable layout. Please, for the love of Google, don’t try to "spice up your page" by having an animated background with a rainbow dancing with a top-hat. Your visitors should know they’re on a reliable website, not an acid trip.
